HISTORY

99 George Street has been in continuous European usage since c. 1788.

It was part of the first hospital grounds, standing just south to the site, with the Assistant Surgeon’s residence occupied by Francis Greenway, the convict architect who had been transported for forging a building contract in 1814.

In 1861, for an unknown reason, the buildings at 95-99 George Street were vacated and the buildings demolished. The land remained vacant until c. 1867 when the present building was constructed.

They were occupied by 1868, with a butcher in No. 95 and a grocer in No. 99, and these buildings continued to be used for those businesses for the next 20 years. 99 George Street was continually used as a grocers and run by a number of tenants until the 1970s. In the late 1970s and early 1980s the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority undertook restoration and reconstruction works on the terrace of shops.

Since the late 1980’s, 99 George Street has been occupied by The Rocks Café, where it continues to thrive.

One of the few places that we kept coming back to for breakfast while we were in Sydney, as their food was just soo good!On our first visit, we... ordered the following:- Grilled Halloumi (Grilled halloumi cheese, soft poached eggs, roasted tomato, harissa, rocket leaves served with grilled za’atar bread).- Salmon Royale (Soft poached eggs, wilted spinach, baby capers, Tasmanian smoked salmon & hollandaise sauce on Sourdough). Both were perfectly cooked, served quickly and in the right temperate.I highly recommend it.read more

Great location, beautiful coffee, average to decent food, surrounded by great atmosphere. Always love the rocks and its beautiful culture. Awesome... Christmas decorations for everyone to explore once you are done with your breakfast/lunch. Staff are friendly and when sitting outside make sure you pick a table under the umbrella as it can get quite hot under the sun. Recommended for all.read more

I loved the food here! We came here for dinner with my parents. They usually don’t like restaurant food as it’s either too salty for them, or too... fatty or… they just don’t like the style of the food.We ordered soup, steamed veggies, pasta, and pan fried Salmon. And everything is finished, eaten to the last bite! So delicious and cooked to perfection! The customer service was always very good. We will come back for sure! Highly recommended!read more

Not bad, just your staple brunch place nothing exciting. Wish the eggs didnt look so plain and phallic like, maybe a splash of herbs.Wish the... roasted mushrooms dish had a sauce as everything felt so dry together.read more

Stopped by here on a Saturday after attending the first The Rocks Market after lockdown. Sat outside, chairs were comfortable and they had a nice... setup in the cordoned off street. Server was friendly and the food came out promptly. My favorite part of the meal was the fries...omg cooked perfectly....not soggy, thin layer of crisp on the outside and great flavor. I'd go back just for the fries!read more

The rocks cafe is a nice eatery along a busy part of George st.There are a few seating options to choose from depending on availability. The outside... area is nice, but make sure you get a table underneath an umbrella if it is a sunny day. The other dining areas are inside on the main floor, and upstairs. The upstairs area is much more quiet than on the street level and is a good place to enjoy your meal if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of George st.The food is good. I go for the steak sandwich with caramalised onion. While the food is delicious and presented well, the portion size is a little on the small side considering the cost. The servers are friendly and provide no frills, efficient service.read more

The Rocks Cafe has a vibrant al fresco dinning expereince. Certainly a must visit when the weather is calm and cool. If one reserves a seat in... advance, then that is better as seating often sold-out and waiting time starts.Need I say more? The staff is kind enough to recommend the piece to be warmed slightly and that certainly brings out the best in this dessert. The staff is lovely and takes utmost care with quick service. A must visit if you wish to indulge in burgers, decadent desserts and sitting with a view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.read more

There is a lot of heritage in this building that cannot be ignored. The supreme majority of this place’s charm is highly due to this. Although the... coffee was good and the staff were delightful, the only places suffered was in the food preparation. Both of meals were a little cold and as moorish as one would expect from the price of such dishes other than that, still recommend this place. Especially if you’re visiting the Rocks for the first time and want to feel the historical aspects.read more
